Map of Lefkada |
Lefkada Town
Lefkada Town sits at the island's Northernmost
tip, right where the causeway joins it to the mainland. Like other capitals in
the Southern Ionian, it was hit by the earthquakes of 1948 and 1953 and the town
was devastated. It's a small town and still very attractive, especially around
the main square, Platia Agiou Spyridonos, and the arcaded high street of
Ioannou Mela. You can catch a glimpse of the old way of the life at the little
Phonograph, Radio and Tradition
Museum. On the Northwestern seafront the modern cultural centre houses the newly expanded Archeological Museum.
Nydhri
Most travelers
will find themselves in Nydhri, the island's biggest resort by far. It's an
average resort but has a lovely setting and a reasonable pebble beach offering
watersports.
Syvota
Around 14km
south of Nydhri, the fjord-like inlet of Syvota, 2 km down a steep hill from the
main road, cuts a deep gash into the coastline. This is one of the most popular
stops for yachting flotillas. There's no beach except for a remote cove, but some
fine taverns, mostly specializing in fish.
Around 5km
west of Syvota but longer by the winding road, Vasiliki, the island's premier watersports
resort, lies at the East end of a huge bay, cut off from the rest of the east
coast by the barren peninsula of cape Lipso.
Lefkada's
satellites
Lefkada has
4 satellite islands clustered off its coast, although only one, Meganissi, the
largest and most interesting, is accessible. Scorpios and Madhouri are owned
and tiny Sparti is a large scrub-covered rock.
