Kythera



Kythera is known as the Island of Aphrodite, the Goddess of love. Is one of the Heptanese, the seven islands of Ionian. It is located in the Southeastern side of the Peloponnese peninsula and generally in South Greece. The previous name of the island was Cerigo. Kythera has been influenced by many civilizations and cultures because it was located in a strategic position.

Beaches
 
Xalkos
Xalkos is a long beach with pebbles and rocks. Easy access by road, turquoise waters, beach bar and sun beds make this beach the first choice for visitors.

Kapsali
On  the South side of the island there is a sandy beach with little pebbles and swallow waters named Kapsali. You can get there by car or by local buses. This medium length beach attracts a lot of people, locals and visitors, due to easy access. Sunbeds, umbrellas, beach barS, taverns and water sports make this beach one the top beaches of the island.

Sparagario
Sparagario is located South of Kapsali. You can go there by following the route from Kapsali village or by sea. It's a small isolated beach with pebbles.

Kyriakoulou
Another small isolated beach is Kyriakoulou which is on the south side of Kythera. The only way to visit it is by boat via sea. Pebbles, rocks and deep cold waters features Kyriakoulou.

 Fyri Ammos(Kalamou)
Near Kalamos there is another well known long beach with colored sand and deep waters, named Fyri Ammos. Easy access by road.

Komponada
Kamponada is one of the most famous and unique beaches of the island. It is located on the east part of Kythera and has large pebbles, rocks and deep waters. Easy access by road. The romantic beautiful sunrise gives the uniqueness in this beach.

Agia Pelagia
Another long sandy beach, Agia Pelagia, is located in the village of Agia Pelagia on the North side of the island. Beach with shallow waters, sun beds, umbrellas, taverns and beach bars. Access by road.

The road the leads to this medium length sandy beach is on the North side of island.

Agios Leutheris
Short isolated beach with pebbles and rocks. It's located near Logothetianika on the west side. Access by road.

Likodimou
Another beach near Logothetianika is Likodimou. Small beach with pebbles, rocks and shallow water. Access by road.


Sights

Palaioxora
It's the Byzantine Capital of Kythera and built by Monemvasians in the middle of 12th century AD on a hill surrounded by the canyon Kakia Lagada.

Mylopotamos's Waterfalls
This is the most fertile village of the island. The ravine of Mylopotamos hosts waterfalls, bridges and mills within a lush landscape. The waterfall Fonissas is the most impressive.

Castle of Kythera
The medieval castle of Kythera is located on the hill above the harbor of Kapsali. The palace, the churches, the houses and cisterns make up the view of the castle. The view from the palace square to Kapsali is breathtaking.

By air: The airport is deep in the interior, 8km Southeast of Potamos. Only few flights from Athens.
By ferry: The huge all-weather  harbor at Diakofti is the arrival point for the daily ferries.

Getting Around
By bus: A single daily service runs between Agia Pelagia-Kapsali-Diakofti, starting at 9am Mon-Sat, returning Diakofti-Kapsali-Agia Pelagia late morning or mid afternoon  depending on ferry times.
