Egina

A substantial and attractive island with a proud history, less than an hour from Pireas, Egina is a popular weekend escape from Athens. The second largest of Argosaronic islands with 82km2 extension and 13.000 inhabitants approximately. The capital of Egina is Egina Town(Hora). It's an atmosphere island especially if you visit midweek or out of season. Famous for its pistachio orchards the island can also boast substantial ancient remains, the finest of which is the beautiful fifth-century BC Temple of Aphaea.

Egina Town, the island's capital, makes an attractive base, with some grand old buildings around a large harbor. It's a large town with plenty of shops places to eat and drink.



Beaches

Souvala
Souvala is a small port in the North 10km from Egina Town. Has a beach with warm mineral water, suitable for treatment of rheumatism and skin diseases.

Aeginitissa
Aeginitissa is located 2km from Perdika and has an organized sandy beach with snack bar and cafes. The rich vegetation reaches the sandy beach. It has turquoise clear waters.

Agia Marina
Agia Marina is a well known and beloved summer destination for Greeks and foreigners. It has a wide sandy beach, well organized with water sport facilities and shallow waters, having a length of 500 meters.

Perdika
Perdika is a traditional fishing village with sandy beach and clear blue waters. It's one of the most famous beaches of Egina. Located in the North. Across Perdika there is another famous beach, Moni.

Sights

The Temple of Aphaea
The Doric Temple of Aphaea stands on a pine-covered hill 12km east of Hora with stunning views all around: Sounio, Athens, Ydra and Peloponnese. Built between 500 and 480 BC, is one of the most complete and visually complex ancient buildings in Greece.

Folklore Museum
Egina's Fokllore Museum is a lovely example of its type, housed in a nineteenth-century mansion. Its upper rooms are packed with fine old furniture and traditional costumes. Downstairs are rooms devoted to fishing and to agricultural life.

The Markelos Tower
The restored tower is an extraordinary miniature castle which was the seat of the first Greek government after independence. It was built around in 1800 by members of Friendly Society.

Transportation
By ferry: Ferry routes are more frequent at weekend and less regular from mid-Sept to May. Agia Marina and Souvala are linked to Pireas once or twice daily.
Getting Around
By bus: The bus station is on Platia Ethneyersias immediately North of the dock. At least 5 buses a day(mostly in morning) head to Souvala and to Agia  Marina at least six along the coast to Perdika.
